Deadmill
This is totally inspired by that scene in Gattaca when Ethan Hawke is on the treadmill and he’s got that recorded loop of Jude Law’s heartbeat so all the astronauts don’t know he has a defective heart, but then the loop ends and he almost gets caught, but he walks to the lockerroom all cool-like, but then he collapses and breathes all hard because he probably almost died. Totally.
The treadmill is a metaphor
Sometimes we have these comics planned out pretty far in advance, at least with a sketchy idea of what they’ll be and then I sort of go into my little Word file with my “Panel 1” “Panel 2” etc… and write the actual dialogue with some tweaks and suggestions from PJ.
Then there are other times where we kind of fly by the seat of our pants and just assume a good idea will come to us the night before, when our brains are usually mushy with Dancing with the Stars playing in the background and sleep deprivation making everything sound like a fever dream.
This was one of the latter times. That guy on the floor writhing in pain? That was me.
